Bio

Nelson C. Bellido is a named partner and managing partner of the Miami office of ROIG Lawyers. He has practiced law for over 27 years. His main areas of practice are in complex commercial litigation, insurance defense, insurance special investigations, employment litigation, finance law and product liability.  Nelson chairs both the Business Litigation and the Special Investigations practice groups of the firm.

Nelson represents clients on a national and international scale in a range of commercial and insurance litigation issues including insurance fraud, insurance coverage disputes, bad faith, and extra-contractual matters, premises liability, banking litigation, real estate liability, intellectual property litigation, and asset recovery. Nelson has experience in defending industries involving insurance, retail, finance, chemical, petroleum, technology, and other service providers in litigation matters, including high-stakes business disputes, including Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) cases, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), and class actions involving the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Nelson is an experienced trial attorney with substantial jury trial experience in both federal and state courts throughout Florida. He has successfully defended Fortune 500 companies in trial matters involving premises liability, product liability, warranty claims, fraud, and breach of contract.

Nelson has lectured on numerous occasions on trial and litigation techniques. Nelson lectures on numerous legal topics as well as on diversity and inclusion. Most recently, in February 2020, Nelson was a featured speaker at the 2020 National Association of Minority & Women Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF) Driving Diversity Conference Trials PAC CLE on Motions in Limine where he served on a panel with Broward Circuit Court Judge Frank Ledee and corporate counsels from Shell Corporation and the FDIC.

In March 2019, Nelson was a speaker on a panel entitled, “Successfully Preparing for Trial” at the American Inns of Court (Spellman-Hoeveler Chapter) Bench & Bar Conference. Nelson presented the defense side of appropriately preparing at every stage of trial.  The panel was composed of two Eleventh Circuit for Miami-Dade County Judges Reemberto Diaz and Abigail Cynamon and two well-known plaintiff attorneys.

In March 2019, Nelson served as moderator of a CLE panel entitled, ‘Securing the Scene – A Trial Lawyer’s Role in Crisis Management” at NAMWOLF’s 2019 Driving Diversity Conference in 2019.

In April 2019 and March 2020, Nelson served as a visiting lecturer for the Duke University Law School having lectured on trial and litigation techniques from a private law firm perspective.

In December 2019, Nelson was elected to serve a 3-year term on the Board of Directors of NAMWOLF where he also serves as co-chair of the Trials Practice Area Committee.  Of note, he was also reappointed by the Chief Judge of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Bertila Soto to the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics & Public Trust where he was unanimously elected in December 2019 to serve as its Chairperson for a two-year term.  Nelson was also elected in 2019 to serve as Co-Chair of the Duke University Hispanic/Latino Alumni Association (DUHLAA).  In 2019, Nelson finished his last year as Chairperson of the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition and remains on its Board as Immediate-Past Chairperson and chair of its Scholarship Committee.

Among awards and recognitions, on September 4, 2019, Nelson was recognized by The Miami-Dade County School Board Administration with a Proclamation for his community service, civic engagement, and leadership in the legal profession and South Florida.  The recipients of the Proclamation were Baseball Hall of Famer and Miami Marlins’ Co-Owner Derek Jeter and Nelson who were both presented with a plaque by the School Board and Superintendent Carvalho.

In fall 2019, Nelson was also recognized by the Florida Association of Women Lawyers (FAWL) as a “Good Guy” for his commitment to the advancement of women in the legal profession. In 2020, Nelson was recognized by The Best Lawyers in America© for his outstanding practice in the area of Insurance Litigation for his second year in a row.

Nelson is a graduate of Duke University (B.A.) and the University of Florida College of Law. His legal career commenced in 1993 as a prosecutor at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.
