Bio

Tom Hamlin has successfully litigated complex, high-stakes cases for many years. Twice he has been named Minnesota Attorney of the Year. His cases include representing the State of Minnesota and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota against Big Tobacco, which resulted in a $7.5 Billion Dollar settlement for his clients. He also represented Kraft Foods, winning a $2.75 Billion Dollar award against Starbucks. He represented a group of charities who sued Wells Fargo for financial fraud during the Great Recession, and won a jury verdict recovering their lost investments. He is currently representing a large group of investors who suffered significant losses in the third largest Ponzi scheme in American history.

Tom represented Honeywell and Pitney Bowes in patent infringement cases. In the Honeywell matter, the company accused Minolta of infringing its patent covering an autofocus SLR camera. The jury awarded Honeywell $100 Million Dollars after a six month jury trial in federal court in Newark, New Jersey. Pitney Bowes accused Hewlett Packard of infringing its patent on a laser printer. Hewlett Packard settled just as the trial was about to begin.

Tom has also done years of pro bono work, representing the ACLU as well as individuals, including a couple who adopted a Native American child whose parents were drug addicts and had initially given up the child for adoption. He convinced the Tribe that the best result for the child was to remain with the adoptive parents. While at Robins Kaplan, Tom was an adjunct professor at William Mitchell College of Law. Prior to joining the firm, he taught at the University of Minnesota Law School after several years as a Legal Aid attorney.
